Free 2GB of Mobile Data Per Day

TPG Mobile is offering a free 12 months trial on their mobile service right now. I bet no Telcos in Singapore can offer you free 2GB of mobile data per day except TPG mobile. My current mobile plan offers only 3GB of data per month!

For those who are interested to sign up for the free trial, you can do so at their website. But please do take note that the registration is closed once they have enough registrations for the day. Even though their website has mentioned that they will open registration daily at 9am, the registration remained closed for a couple of days. I have to keep monitoring the registration page and I was lucky to register for the free trial when they opened last week.

Collection of the SIM card was easy at Shaw Center. You only have to flash the barcode in the email that TPG emailed you immediately after the registration and do bring along your NRIC for identification.

With such fantastic deal like above, it is no wonder TPG mobile can be a threat to Singtel, Starhub and M1.

Goodbye StarHub

Last week, I have sold off StarHub from my stock portfolio with a profit gain of 50.9% including dividends collected over the years. I guess Telecommunication stocks are not as resilient as everyone think it is. MobileOne has fallen and so has StarHub.

Below are the reasons why I sold off StarHub:-

Decreasing Dividends

Over the last 5 years, this was the first time StarHub has reduced its dividend from 5 cents to 4 cents that was paid out in May. Moving forward, I believe StarHub will continue to reduce its dividends.

Cable TV No Longer the Trend

With the increasing popularity of online video streaming websites such as Netflix, it is threatening the pay TV service business.

Are you still a Hubber?

Gone are the days where if you subscribe to StarHub’s cable TV, mobile line and internet broadband, you get perks or discounts off your bill. It is hard to fulfill the criteria nowadays with more choices out there. You may opt for Netflix instead of cable TV or internet broadband from myRepublic instead of Starhub internet fibre. I guess offering more discounts and perks is not sustainable for StarHub’s business.

Recycling Capital and Wait for Opportunity

I observed StarHub’s share price is on a downtrend, I want to sell it while still making slight profit. The capital plus profits from the sell transaction can be invested in another stock.

StarHub Takes Double Hit in FY16

Few months back, Netflix announced its entry into Singapore. This has impacted StarHub and Singtel as both are in the Pay TV business.

Recently, there has been news that StarHub will stop eight of its FOX channels as renewal negotiations between FOX and StarHub cannot be reached.

Currently, StarHub makes up 3% of my stock portfolio. It has been providing good dividend and growth over the years. Based on 1 month stock chart, the price of StarHub has plunged 10.57%. Read More
