Looking for dividend stocks to buy in January 2022 but not sure where to start? I have stopped screening for dividend stocks using stock screeners in 2021. This is because the current dividend yield can be inaccurate during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Let me explain. We know that the current dividend yield is based on the formula
Current Yield % = (Previous Full Year Dividend / Current Stock Price) x 100%
This is on the assumption that the company or REIT will continue to pay the same full year dividend in 2021 just like 2020. As companies and REITs started cutting their dividends pay out in 2021, the current yield % becomes highly inaccurate.
Why am I resuming stock screening in 2022? Well, it has been 2 years since COVID-19 struck. Most companies have reported their FY21 full year dividends whereby the COVID-19 situations have been factored in.
In FY22, I am assuming most REITs will pay the same or slightly higher dividends as compared to FY21 and thus the Current Yield % can be a possible indicator that we can now rely on to identify dividend yield stocks.
Below are the conditions I set in the stock screener to identify dividend stocks.
- Current Yield (%) >= 5 and <= 10
- Price / Earnings <=20
- Price / Book <= 3
- Market Capitalization >= 1B
