- P = the principal, or your original amount invested
- r = the annual interest rate, expressed as a decimal (5% becomes 0.05)
- n = the number of times interest is compounded per year (12 for monthly, 4 for quarterly, 1 for annually)
- t = the number of years the money is invested
Worked Example: Using the Formula Manually
Say you invest S$10,000 at an annual interest rate of 4%, compounded monthly, for 10 years. Plugging into the formula:
A = 10,000 x (1 + 0.04/12)12 x 10
A = 10,000 x (1.00333)120
A = 10,000 x 1.4908
A = S$14,908
Your S$10,000 grows to roughly S$14,908 after 10 years, meaning you earned about S$4,908 in interest. Compare this to simple interest at the same rate, which would only earn S$4,000 over the same period (4% x S$10,000 x 10 years). The extra S$908 comes purely from compounding, interest earning interest on itself.
How Compounding Frequency Changes Your Results
The more frequently interest compounds, the more you earn, though the difference shrinks as frequency increases. Using the same S$10,000 at 4% for 10 years:

Notice that the jump from annual to monthly compounding matters more than the jump from monthly to daily. This is why most banks compounding daily versus monthly makes only a marginal difference in practice, despite what marketing materials sometimes imply.

CPF Ordinary Account: CPF OA compounds monthly at the prevailing interest rate. How to Use a Compound Interest Calculator

When comparing calculator results, always check whether the tool is using nominal versus effective annual rates, since this is a common source of confusion. The effective annual rate accounts for compounding frequency and will always be equal to or higher than the nominal stated rate.
